On the 21st October 1805 Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson left our city harbour here in Portsmouth on her majesty’s ship called ‘Victory’ leading 26 other boat’s into the battle of Trafalgar just off the South West coast of Spain. This battle against the Spanish and French was pivotal in the Napoleonic wars as it gave the United Kingdom and Ireland control of the surrounding seas and removed the threat of invasion.
As the ships drew closer into battle the Admiral gave instruction to his Lieutenant to flag a signal of motivation to the fleet, a signal that became the most famous naval signal in British history. ‘England confides that every man will do his duty’
The Admiral was shot and killed during the war but the boat itself the ‘Victory’ still stands proud here in a dry dock in the city over 100 years on, here’s a nod to some of our rich navy heritage.
