French artist and skateboarder Lucas Beaufort is best known for his colourful and stylistic artwork, not to mention the incredible 2017 documentary Devoted. In addition to creating board graphics for the likes of Almost Skateboards, Sk8 Mafia, Magenta and Zero Skateboards to name a few, his latest epic undertaking is the HEART book, created to celebrate skate shops around the world. It's name coming from his belief that skate shops are the beating heart of every skate scene. And after getting in touch with skate shops across the globe, Lucas spent a year collating interviews with 90 stores, which tells the individual stories of the shops and people behind them that have supported skateboarders and skateboarding for the past 45 years.
As an independent UK skate shop that's been open since 1997, we're very proud to have been asked by Lucas to contribute to the HEART book and tell Bored of Southsea's story. Co-owner and store manager Gary Scott shared his journey and experiences of running Bored over the past 24 years. Ours is just one story in this huge book, and it's packed full with glimpses in to the history of skateboarding from the persepctive of the unsung heroes that have kept this amazing movement alive across the world. It kicks off with the OG's like 35th Avenue in Washington, Titus in Germany and Slam City Skates in London. Then runs chronologically by opening date through all of the shops, with friends like Focus in Scotland, Note in Manchester, Lost Art in Liverpool, Fifty-Fifty in Bristol and Welcome in Leeds all making an appearence. The Heart book is a true work of passion, dedication and love, skateboarding thanks you for creating this beautiful book.
