Carhartt WIP

Hamilton Carhartt founded his company in Detroit, Michigan in 1889. He began producing overalls in Denim and Duck canvas, mostly for workers on the railways and became popular due to their durability and hard wearing. During the early nineties their popularity grew massively in street culture...

and one of the reasons was that many drug dealers started wearing their jackets because they were extremely warm and had lots of pockets, so they could carry a lot more stuff. In turn, the kids on the streets saw this and thought it was the cool thing to wear. This popularity continued to grow, especially with sprayers, clockers, in hip-hop culture and other urban subcultures. In 1994 Work In Progress was founded, a European distribution network for Carhartt, producing classic pieces from their work-wear range. This in turn brought heritage garments to a new audience, re-working and re-fitting original designs and tailoring them for more active use in an urban environment. They achieved this all whist staying true to Carhartt’s original values, quality, durability and comfort.
